Ratu Wiliame Katonivere

Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere was recently the 6th President of the Republic of Fiji.

He is highly respected throughout Fiji for steering the country safely and constitutionally through the regime change which occurred after the 2022 general elections.

Holding the position of Tui Macuata, he is a prominent Fijian Chief. He is from Naduri village in Macuata.

Ratu Wiliame was previously an enlisted soldier in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, culminating in an appointment as Commanding Officer of the 7th Fiji Infantry Regiment, Territorial Forces Brigade. He has also held several board positions, including on the iTaukei Affairs Board, the Fiji Sugar Corporation, Fiji Pine, Copra Millers, Tropik Wood Industries, Rewa Rice Ltd, the Forestry Board and Airports Fiji Ltd.

Ratu Wiliame is currently leading an international initiative to protect the oceans and reefs surrounding Macuata.

It goes without saying that Ratu Wiliame has contributed enormously to Fiji and has helped many people. However, the one event that stood out for him was the absolute joy he felt when he helped a family he was standing behind at the supermarket queue during Diwali. Their little girl was upset at having to take a toy out of their shopping cart because the family could not afford it. Ratu Wiliame stepped in and made a contribution to the family’s purchases. The little girl’s tears stopped and were replaced with a huge and priceless smile. It was this event that the great man recalled as one that really struck a chord in his heart.
